“In the past few years, Watts has performed a series of controversial, barn-burning experiments challenging the whole Influentials thesis. He has analyzed email patterns and found that highly connected people are not, in fact, crucial social hubs. He has written computer models of rumor spreading and found that your average slob is just as likely as a well-connected person to start a huge new trend.”

Is the Tipping Point Toast? — Duncan Watts — Trendsetting

This is a really interesting read.  I don’t like the amount of self-importance that the internet bestows on select individuals.  I really appreciate that everyone has something unique and awesome to share with other people.  Part of why I like tumblr.  Aside from several people, whom I won’t name, its a more autonomous and loose network of people that know each other for a variety of reasons.

A good, recommended read.
